Wermelskirchen - rebuilt in 1758
Wermelskirchen is a Bergisch town like something out of a picture book. In the beautiful, old town centre, which was rebuilt in 1758 after the big fire, slate and timber-framed houses set the scene and bear witness to the town’s long past. The first documented mention of the town goes as far back as 1150, as Werenboldeskirken. Anyone who gets to know the town better will be surprised by the extensive cultural offerings. The centre of activity here is the multifunctional meeting place, the "Kattwinkelsche Fabrik", which offers a fantastic cabaret and crafts programme.
In addition to the Dhünntalsperre reservoir, the enchanted Eifgental valley beckons as a hiking destination and, when your feet get too hot and your legs are tired, you can recharge your batteries with a typical Bergische Kaffeetafel (coffee and snacks) at one of the many cosy restaurants.
On advent weekends, the Christmas market in Wermelskirchen beckons, boasting Germany’s tallest natural Christmas tree, and sparkles with its fascinating light show as darkness falls.
