Knowledge and appreciation of a characteristic landscape element

Orchard meadows are typical for the landscape in the Bergisches Land Nature Park and important for the diversity of the cultural landscape. They provide valuable habitat for numerous animals and plants.

Already since 2015, the nature park has organized action days at secondary schools as part of two projects with the Biological Station im Rhein-Sieg-Kreis e.V.. The projects are funded by the LVR Landscape Cultural Preservation Network. Over a period of seven years in total, the Biological Station im Rhein-Sieg-Kreis e.V. in cooperation with the Biological Station Bonn/Rhein-Erft e.V., the three nature parks Bergisches Land, Siebengebirge and Rhineland carries out numerous actions at primary and secondary schools in the Rhine-Sieg District.

The aim of the projects is to awaken knowledge and appreciation for orchard meadows as a characteristic landscape element. Over the course of a school year, the children learn all kinds of things about the species-rich meadows and the local cultural landscape. For example, they taste different apple varieties, plant their own fruit tree and learn how to care for it throughout the year.
