Nutscheid

Short facts

  • Windeck
Wooded mountain ridge with scattered farmsteads and numerous hiking trails. The historic "Roman road" runs along the ridge and is popular with cyclists and long-distance hikers.

The Nutscheid ridge stretches from Hennef to Waldbröl with an extensive forest area between the rivers Sieg and Bröl and merges into the Morsbacher Bergland in the direction of Siegen, with extensive meadows and pastures in the area of the farmsteads opening up views of the Siebengebirge and the Bergisches Land. At 378 meters, the Hohe Wäldchen is the highest point of the ridge. Numerous historical relics along the way bear witness to the former importance of the Nutscheid as a transport route for raw materials and goods between the Rhine Valley and the Siegerland. Traces in the terrain are reminiscent of medieval customs posts. In Windeck, the high-level trail leads through the Galgenberg nature reserve with its ecologically valuable coppice forests. The eponymous place of execution is still clearly visible today and the former location of the gallows is marked by a mighty oak tree. There are also traces of former military use in the area around Waldbröl. In 2015, the nationally renowned nature adventure park "Panarbora" was created on the site of a former barracks. Numerous hiking tours run through the stream valleys and over the heights of the Nutscheid mountain range.
