"Landjuden an der Sieg" memorial site and tour through Rosbach on Jewish traces
In 1988, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the November pogroms, the Rhein-Sieg district decided to document Jewish life on the Sieg and to make a contribution to the work of remembrance. This is how the "Landjuden an der Sieg" memorial came into being. Hilde Seligmann made the former home of her deceased father-in-law Max Seligmann available for this purpose. The Jewish second-hand goods dealer was the only one of his siblings to survive the Holocaust - the house was his and his family's home and workplace until 1971.
After several years of extensive renovation, the memorial, which opened in 1994, has been offering a completely redesigned permanent exhibition in the nine rooms of the two-storey building since the fall of 2024. Religion and culture, work and everyday life, as well as the persecution and extermination of the Jews who once lived in the Siegen region can be experienced through the history of the Seligmann family. Life after 1945 is also a topic.
Following the guided visit to the memorial, you will be accompanied by district archivist Dr. Claudia Maria Arndt on a short walk through the center of Rosbach. There you will encounter traces of Jewish life that are still visible today and the stories behind them.
