metabolon combines games, fun and adventure with exciting facts about energy and waste.
Anyone who whizzes down Germany’s longest double slide (110 meters, open to ages 8 and up) on mats from the hill at the :metabolon site will find it hard to believe they’re on a former landfill site. So the climb to the Kegelspitze is not only rewarded with a great view—those who wish can also slide comfortably down the first few meters of elevation. Currently, the slide is open every Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. During North Rhine-Westphalia school breaks, it’s also open Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Please check the slide’s opening hours in advance.)
As part of the area’s transformation into an environmental education, research, and recreation site, a mountain bike park, a cross-golf course, a Segway track, and a low ropes course were created, among other features. You can also go hiking on the former landfill site. Along an energy education trail, the compost worm “Leppel” explains the environment to children. Younger children will also enjoy a long, curved slide (ages 3 and up).
The highlight for visitors is the 360-degree view from the man-made landfill hill, whose summit visitors reach after climbing 360 steps. Small trampolines at the summit invite visitors to engage in more physical activity. Along the way, whether ascending or descending, visitors can peek inside numerous trash cans lining the path and see or hear all sorts of fascinating facts about waste—some trash cans can even talk.
At the foot of the hill, there is an exhibition on the theme of “House of the Future,” focusing on energy efficiency and energy-efficient building renovation.
At the :metabolon Bistro, visitors can enjoy refreshing drinks, coffee, ice cream, a daily changing lunch menu, and other treats. The bistro is open Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sundays, weather permitting, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The exhibition “Linear Becomes Circular—From Knowledge to Action”—located directly next to the “garbage wall”—invites visitors of all ages to interactively explore the transition from a linear world to a world of circular value creation through various exhibits and displays. Featuring various products as examples of circular value creation in regional businesses, the exhibition is an interactive highlight at the site and is open to visitors.
Some recreational activities can only be booked on weekends (Saturday/Sunday), as they are scheduled to coincide with regular waste management operations during the week. The observation deck and the bistro are accessible every day during opening hours.
