Cave trail - A journey through the world of caves

In 2019, it was the discovery of the century, and not just for the Bergisches Land region: researchers had spent 20 years searching for an entrance to the cave, which they suspected was in the Mühlenberg near Ründeroth, before finding a way into the "Windloch" and discovering an incredible underground realm of extraordinary crystals, limestone formations and impressive cavities - of unimagined dimensions and never before entered by humans. After the first few months of surveying, it was clear that at more than 8,000 meters, the Windloch is the largest cave in North Rhine-Westphalia and even one of the top 10 in Germany.

Ten information boards along the edge of this 8.4-kilometre trail provide you with lots of information about the work of the cave explorers, you can see stream bends and karst springs and finally visit the Aggertal Cave on a guided tour.

The trail has a total of 10 information boards and 2 audio stations. We would like to thank Dietmar Birkhahn, who looks after the trail as a volunteer trail patron.
