Aggertalhöhle (Agger valley cave)

The smaller of two caves in Ründeroth, but the one that can be visited at all. The cave is located directly on the "Cave Trail", the Bergischer Streifzug with the number 14, which starts at the railway station in Ründeroth.

With a total length of 1,071 m, the Aggertal Cave is the longest cave in the Rhineland. The total elevation difference within the cave is 31 m. It is located in a reef limestone formation of the Hobräcker Strata, which geologically dates to the Lower Middle Devonian.

The guided tour route itself is 270 m long with an elevation difference of approximately 10 m and is easy to navigate. The entrance hall and main passageway are also wheelchair-accessible. The temperature remains between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius year-round.

The Aggertal Cave is open every year from April 1 to November 1, Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as well as on holidays. A standard guided tour lasts approximately 45–50 minutes. The first tour begins at 10:00 a.m. Subsequent tours start every 75 minutes. Visitors can also purchase gifts or souvenirs to take home as mementos.

The Aggertal Cave is easily accessible via the RB 25 train. A 3.5-km hiking trail leads from the Engelskirchen train station to the cave, and there is also a bus service. Here you’ll find a travelogue about a visit to the cave.

Please remember to wear warm clothing, as the temperature inside the cave remains between 6 and 8 degrees Celsius year-round.

It is not possible to explore the entire guided tour route in a wheelchair, as there are narrow passages and steps inside the cave. However, it is possible to see at least parts of the cave in a wheelchair. Please contact us in advance of a planned visit to discuss this.
