Just behind the Derenbachtal hiking car park, you climb uphill under old deciduous trees on a path that becomes increasingly narrow and root-covered. In the middle of the forest, where beech, spruce, and mixed woodland alternate, you reach the "Roman Road", a historic trade route between Cologne and Siegerland. After crossing it, benches offer the opportunity to rest with a beautiful view over a wide meadow. Initially still on wider paths, later alternating downhill and uphill – partly through areas shaped by reforestation and forest conversion – the route continues past a shelter and steeply down near the Derenbach. The route then leads you uphill again on a forest path with gentle switchbacks until you reach the village of Winterscheid with its beautiful Romanesque St. Servatius Church. The path leads steeply downhill over meadows, then later uphill again over beautiful paths through the middle forest to the small village of Schreckenberg with its old fruit trees and half-timbered houses. The route continues through an interesting forest section with trees of different generations; the abundant deadwood provides suitable habitats for insects, fungi, and mosses. The multi-layered structure due to different tree heights is considered a clear feature of a near-natural managed forest. Past a shelter, a forest path comfortably but steeply leads down the Rennenberg until you emerge from the dense greenery and reach the starting point again.
