Fires, the zeal of faith and the first firefighters.

Anyone strolling through the picturesque old town of Bergneustadt will hardly suspect that the town has fallen victim to several devastating fires. The people of Bergneustadt have always rebuilt their houses with great enthusiasm. It is no coincidence that the town is now an important center for fire departments in North Rhine-Westphalia, and not just because of the fire department recreation center founded here in 1956.

The 12 km long "Feuer & Flamme-Weg" (Fire & Flame Trail) shows that the people on the border between Oberbergisch and Sauerland were not only passionate about fire protection from an early age. It leads from the old town to Wiedenest, where Christians in the Middle Ages erected one of the "Bonten Kerken", which is widely respected today. The imposing memorial to an ardent peace campaigner is located along the way, as is a lookout tower, which is still used by the fire department as a lookout in the event of forest fires, and an elevated water tank, without which even the most modern firefighters could do little.

This tour takes you on a journey through the history of the fire department, which dates back to the ancient Romans, as well as to today's Phönix conference hotel in the building of the former fire department recreation home. A unique collection of firefighter helmets from all over the world and deep insights into Bergneustadt's dicey history await you at the end of the tour in the Bergneustadt local history museum.

Part of the STREIFZUG runs along the Bergischer Panoramasteig.

The trail has a total of 7 information boards. We would like to thank Michael Kresin, who looks after the trail as a volunteer trail patron.
