Short facts

  • Nümbrecht

Majestätisch thront Schloss Homburg über dem Homburger Ländchen in Mitten von Wald und Wiesen.

Homburg Castle is a place steeped in history in the Bergisches Land region. It was first mentioned in a document in 1276, but its origins go back even further. Archaeological finds from 1999 suggest that there was a round tower, a so-called donjon, in the upper castle courtyard as early as the 11th century. The castle itself developed from an early medieval hilltop castle of the Counts of Sayn (later Sayn-Wittgenstein-Homburg). Its appearance has changed permanently over the centuries, and in the 17th century it took on the appearance of a baroque castle that still characterizes it today.
Homburg Castle has served as a museum since 1926. Today, the collection of the museum, which is run by the Oberberg district, comprises over 20,000 cultural and historical objects. The exhibition in the castle invites visitors on a journey through the centuries: The spectrum of topics ranges from castle and regional history to the different ways of working and living in the Bergisches Land region from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. From baroque hunting and regional portraiture to the presentation of a historical armory - the displays in the exhibition's themed rooms offer exciting discoveries for all visitors.
The museum can also be visited during opening hours without a guided tour. Guided tours for groups, kindergartens and schools as well as children's birthday parties can be booked via www.schloss-homburg.de/museum/museum_erleben/

Important information:

The presentation of the collection in the castle is currently being extensively revised. Among other things, renovation work is being carried out on the floors, the electrics and the lighting. During this modernization, the entire exhibition in the castle is temporarily closed to visitors. The special exhibition "Mechanical Animal World" (until May 17, 2026) as well as the castle tower and the natural history exhibition in the forester's lodge are open as normal. During the construction work, a reduced admission price of 3.50 for adults and free admission for children under the age of 18 applies to the open areas.

If you have any questions, please contact the visitor service on 02261 8841-71 (Tues.-Sun. 11 am to 6 pm).

Programs that have already been booked will take place. The museum will inform you in good time of any spatial adjustments that may be necessary.
