Most famous flight of steps in Wuppertal

The most famous of the more than 500 flights of steps in Wuppertal is mentioned in a popular Elberfeld folk song. This flight of 103 steps winds to a height of 16 metres in several sections and connects today’s trendy Wuppertal district around Luisenstrasse with Ölberg (Mount of Olives) above.

Visitors are puzzled by the name of steps, but the answer is quite simple: Its name is onomatopoeic and comes from the sound made by the wooden shoes of workers as they made their way up and down the steps. Every step made a little tip tapping noise.

A visit to the Tippen-Tappen-Tönchen is always worth it: From the top you have a fantastic view over the Wupper valley to the Historische Stadthalle and the Schwimmoper on the opposite side. And a walk around the Luisenviertel and the unique Mount of Olives, the southern part of Elberfeld Nordstadt, is also worth it.
