HIKE THROUGH FOREST AND MEADOWS AND ACROSS THE WUPPER

Fantastic views to the right and left of the Wupper river bank

The route covers a distance of 6 kilometres at around 135 metres above sea level along the Bergische Weg to Unterburg and back along the banks of the Wupper via Müngstener Straße. Despite mostly well-maintained hiking paths, good footwear is recommended, especially in wet weather.

The starting point of the route is the Jagenberg walkers’ car park on Burger Landstraße in Solingen. It can also be reached easily on trolley bus line 683 “Vohwinkel-SG-Burg”. The “Stadtwald” stop is very close to the walkers’ car park

Start at the Jagenberg walkers’ car park

From the Jagenberg walkers' car park, head towards Burger Landstraße and walk up it for a short distance towards Solingen. You will reach a turning to the right where the “N” and the Burger Brezelweg “B” hiking trails begin. The route leads slightly downhill with fantastic views to Wermelskirchen, past horse pastures down into the forest. Pass a gate here and soon you will reach a turning to the right. Take this turning and in a little while you will see from the orange markings that you are on the Bergische Weg.

Along the Bergische Weg

The gently curving path leads downhill to begin with past two spring pools of the Jagenberger Bach. Shortly afterwards, the path begins to head uphill. On reaching the brow of the hill, you will see another signpost on your left. Follow it slightly down to the left in the direction of Burg/Diederichstempel. You will catch a glimpse of Unterburg and the church below you through the trees. The path turns right here and joins a wider track which you follow down to the left. Soon you find yourself in Solinger Straße in front of the former Burg town hall.

Smart people turn off at Hasencleverstrasse

Cross to the other side of the road, head left and cross Hasencleverstraße in the direction of the cable car. Otherwise, head left along the Eschbach towards the centre of the town. In front of the old “Burgvoight”pub, turn left between the timber-framed houses. You are now on the Müngsten-Burg hiking trail marked among other things as “A2”. After several hundred metres, you will reach the new Wupper bridge at the former Wiesenkotten. The grinding cottage that used to be on this site served as a popular destination pub for a long time, but was destroyed by fire in 2018.

Back on the Bergische Weg – and via the Brezelweg to your destination

Cross the Wupper to the western side and enter the forest again where you turn left uphill. Follow the wide track that meanders in a zig-zag pattern until you reach a Bergische Weg signpost at the top. Go left in the direction of Burg and Leichlingen. After a long drawn-out right hand bend, you reach the turning that you will recognise from the start of the walk. The Bergische Weg turns left here, but keep straight ahead on the Brezelweg to get back to Burger Landstraße. Follow this to the left back to the starting point of the walk.

Tip: In Unterburg, you can make a detour to Oberburg to visit the famous Schloss Burg. Just jump on the cable car and up you go! Both Unterburg and Oberburg also offer the opportunity for a culinary stop off and a chance to try some typical Bergisch specialities. Bon appetit!
