An impressive structure | Herbringhauser Dam

The Herbringhauser Dam, which was also known as the “Upper Herbringhauser Dam” until 2006, was built by the city of Barmen from 1898 to 1901. For the dam to actually be erected, quarries had to be acquired beforehand. The stones and earth were transported via the light railway.

Around 7,000 m³ of earth and 1,500 m³ of rock were removed during the excavations for the dam. 42,000 m³ of Greywacke quarry stones were used to build the wall. The dam is used to supply drinking water to the city of Wuppertal.

The Herbringhauser Dam is surrounded by picturesque hiking trails, which give you the opportunity to marvel not only at the imposing dam wall, but also at the magnificent surrounding area.
