The start offers a visit to the museum village and the castle ruins. To warm up, you use the paved access path along the railway embankment and climb a steep path at the museum village in Altwindeck to the castle ruins – which for centuries was a strategic stronghold of the County of Berg. Today, the castle complex impresses with an unforgettable panoramic view. Through a hollow path, you enter a quiet mountain forest. Steeply down, over stepping stones across the Westertbach and two more climbs, then you reach the Rosbachtal with a mill that has dining options. An exciting footpath that becomes steeper and rockier leads to the "Alter Stuhl" viewpoint. At just under 280 m in height, the ascent is no alpine challenge, but the view is still extraordinary and rewarding. After enjoying the view, the path descends into the Burgbachtal and later through the Auer Forest with 200-year-old giant oaks, before reaching the stage end at the station in Au.
