Holsteiner Steps

Short facts

  • Wuppertal

Each step is a feeling, as colourful and varied as the city | Holsteiner Steps

Wuppertal, the city of steps! The hilly location means that you are always climbing steps that stand between houses and connect whole districts with each other. The Holsteiner Steps, which have connected Gathe with Holsteiner Straße on the Engelnberg since 1900, are a particular highlight. The steps underwent a makeover as part of the Regionale 2006. The result: a sad staircase has been transformed into bright, colourful steps – as bright and colourful as life itself.

Divided into nine sections, all 112 steps have been given a multicoloured new look. Each features a word in a colour that complements the background. The work is called “Scala of Feelings”. In 2016, a tree motif was also added to the staircase on the gable wall of Holsteiner Straße 26.
